Vacuum Formed Fiberglass Trailers

Vacuum Formed Fiberglass.

This a term that we like to throw around here at Road Dog.  It’s cool and it sets us apart from other manufacturers of touring trailers. But what does it really mean?  There are quite a few people who know what it is, but for those who don’t, it is quite simple.

Let start with the basics.  Like most fiberglass products you see, most touring trailers that are made out of fiberglass are made with what is called “chop”  or “chopped fiberglass”. This mixture of pieces of chopped fiberglass and resin are shot out of a gun into the fiberglass mold which in turn gives it its name.

The end product is of course very nice on the outside, like any fiberglass product you have seen.  But if you notice on the inside it can be quite rough and unappealing.   Depending on the manufacturer  and their varied processes, some can be better than others and some have actual fiberglass splinters that can be quite vexing.    This rough surface inside a touring trailer can be very hard on your gear.  It can act like sandpaper on duffel bags and helmets, unless some sort of barrier like carpet is installed.

Now  ”Vacuum Formed”  fiberglass is a completely different animal.   This is still fiberglass but is done in quite a different manner.  There is a master mold made like before, but now a counter mold is made as well.  These two pieces fit together perfectly, leaving a small space in between the two.  This space is a pre-determined dimension for wall thickness.  Next, a thin sheet of special fiber mesh is laid in the mold and then these forms are fastened together.    Two hoses are hooked at either end of the mold, and as one hose injects the resin, the other is “vacuuming” out the displace air.

After a short curing process, the piece is removed from the mold, and you have a piece that is not only a consistent weight and thickness, you have a piece that is as smooth on the inside as it is on the outside.  This is why we like this term “vacuum formed” so much.   The inside of your Road Dog is as smooth as glass.  It is super easy on your gear and doesn’t necessarily need a carpet barrier.  It is also super easy to clean and doesn’t hold that fiberglass smell forever.

So the next time you are looking at a touring trailer, pay special attention to the inside as well as the outside, the difference will be plain to see. This is just one of the many features that sets Road Dog apart from other touring trailers.

My Road Dog Trailer Testimonial

I had been casually looking for a motorcycle trailer for about two years. I looked at several that I thought were just OK, and several that I thought were just plain ugly. I hadn’t found one that I thought, OK, this is the one, until I saw the Road Dog Wide Track Deluxe. It jumped right off the page at me when I saw it in a magazine ad and I knew at once, this is my new trailer. I was a hot rodder in my younger days, and when I saw this trailer with its low, sleek, smooth design and wide tires with mag wheels, it reminded me of a really cool looking custom street rod. I knew I just had to have one.

I went to the Road Dog website and looked at all the different models of Road Dog trailers and accessories. I noticed that the trailers and accessories were very reasonably priced. I called Road Dog and spoke with Karl. He was very informative and explained all the great features including the famous Road Dog suspension that keeps the trailer and weight very low to the ground so that the trailer tows much better in curves, wind, and on rough roads.

I placed my order for a Wide Track Deluxe. When I received it and towed it behind my Goldwing, I found it was all it was hyped up to be. Because it pulls and corners so well, and I can hardly tell its even behind me, I tow it most of the time around home, on my daily commute to work and back, and when running errands. This way I always have room for anything I may need to haul, and makes my bike even more practical than it already is.

Because I was so impressed with the quality and price of their trailers, I became a Road Dog dealer.

Ordering a Motorcycle Trailer

The biggest favor you can do for yourself when you decide you want a trailer is to order early.  Not just a Road Dog trailer but any trailer.  There are a lot of people out there just like you who have one or more trips planned for the summer, and this is the year you want a trailer.

Now,  here is the most common scenario.  ”We are leaving in 2 weeks and we would like to buy a trailer”  Wow!  This is a tall order for a  color matched fiberglass trailer with custom options.  They take a bit of time to build, not to mention the added time for shipping.  It is always best to give yourself some time to receive the trailer and familiarize yourself with the functions and characteristics of pulling a trailer especially if you are new to this experience.  With so many orders simultaneously, it is hard to accommodate these types of orders.

The next scenario is…” We aren’t leaving for a couple of months yet so we will wait until we get closer to leaving and then order it”   See scenario #1.  It doesn’t hurt to have the trailer ahead of time.  You will enjoy it more,  learn a little about packing it, what you want to take with you, and what you want to leave behind.   Some people say they don’t want the trailer just sitting around a month before they leave.  Believe me, when you get your new Road Dog, you wont let it set very long.  They are a great addition to your bike and are not just for touring.

You will find yourself using it for all sorts of reasons like groceries, golfing, commuting, and all around errands.   So if you are considering ordering your trailer, my advice is the sooner the better.  It will make both our lives a lot easier.

The departure date for your trip will be here sooner than you think.  So don’t delay, order a Road Dog today!  Just a little spur of the moment slogan there.

Have fun on your summertime adventures!

Motorcycle Trailer Towing Tips & Techniques

Baggers (motorcycles with saddle bags) have become some of the hottest selling motorcycles in the last couple of years, and rightly so. They help make a motorcycle not only fun and economical, but also more practical, being able to carry items along that would’ve had to be left behind before.  And just as baggers have become more popular, so too have motorcycle trailers.  Again, rightly so for several reasons. Even more items can be carried along, whether going on a long trip, or going home from the grocery store or home improvement store. Also, with Road Dog Trailers having 5 styles of high quality, low priced, very stylish trailers, it has become much more affordable and cool looking to pull a trailer than ever before.

With so many more riders towing trailers, some general towing tips and techniques may be in order.

When hooking up a trailer to a motorcycle, several things need to be checked. Make sure the coupler is adjusted correctly on the hitch ball, latched and locked down. There is another post on this sight that goes in to detail on coupler adjustment. If the motorcycle hitch is adjustable, adjust it vertically so that the trailer is as close to level as possible with the weight on the motorcycle that will be on it while towing, and the weight in the trailer that will be in it while being towed. Cross the safety chains when hooking them up to create a cradle under the trailer tongue. Check that all the trailer lights are working properly. Check the tire pressure. Last of all adjust the motorcycle mirrors to be able to see at least a small part of the trailer with it straight behind the motorcycle.

If new to trailer towing, its best to practice in a parking lot first. It may take just a little more throttle than normal when starting out. Check the stopping power of the motorcycle to see how much the stopping distance is increased with the trailer attached. Starting with small swerves, swerve left and right as in lane changes. When turning corners, overshoot the turns just a little more than usual to keep the trailer’s path behind the motorcycle. Back up a few times to see what that will be like. Remember when parking, it will take a larger area than normal for both the motorcycle and trailer to fit in.

Road Dog Trailers is fast becoming the most popular motorcycle trailer company on the market. I believe this is because we overbuild our motorcycle trailers to meet the ever growing demands of the motorcycle enthusiast. A large part of our innovation and improvements to our trailers come from our loyal customers who give us feedback and input that in turn helps us to manufacture the best motorcycle trailer we can.

Road Dog Trailers have always been designed from the ground up specifically for motorcycles. Our proprietary torsion suspension allows all Road Dog trailers a very low center of gravity. What this means for you is a motorcycle trailer that pulls smoothly and effortlessly with almost zero effect on your ride. There is a difference in motorcycle trailers and Road Dog is leading the way! Our testimonials that we have received over the years can tell you more about Road Dog Trailers than anything. It seems the one common scenario that I hear from all our customers is that the style and design of the Road Dog is what catches their attention but the performance is what really surprised them and is what they love most.

Advantages of LED Trailer Lights

Some of the trailers being built today have LED lights, while some still use the old technology incandescent lights.

LED’s are considerably more efficient than incandescent, requiring much less power to operate. This is definitely something to take in to consideration when deciding which trailer to purchase. If your motorcycle already has several add on lights, as many of ours do, the motorcycle’s charging system and battery may already be maxed out. Adding even more lights with a trailer may cause problems, unless that trailer has LED lighting, which would add very little to the total electrical load.

Because LED’s are so effecient and use very little power, many riders do not feel they need to install an isolation relay with the trailer wiring, and add to the expense of purchasing a trailer. While this is a valid point, others go ahead and install the isolation relay, just as a precautionary safety measure, especially if their motorcycle has ABS. There is another post on this website that goes in to much more detail about an isolation relay and would be worth reading.

LED’s last much longer than incandescents. LED’s typically last 50,000 hours, compared to an incandescent at 1500 hours, so you don’t spend time and money replacing LED’s.

LED’s are much more resistant than incandescents to temperature and vibrational shocks, which are very common traits on a trailer. LED’s also perform better when subjected to frequent on – off cycles, such as turn signals and brake lights.

There’s only a couple of disadvantages to LED’s. One is that they are a more directional or spot light, which is not a disadvantage on the back and sides of a trailer. The other is that they begin to dim somewhat after about 70,000 hours, which again, would not be a problem on a trailer.

As you can see, LED’s have many advantages over the older technology incandescent lights. These advantages should be worth considering when making the decision on which trailer to purchase.

Road Dog Trailers installs LED lights on our full line of motorcycle touring trailers.

Motorcycle Trailer Maintenance

Routine maintenance on your vehicles and various equipment can seem like a drag sometimes, but it is very necessary if you want keep them as trouble free and reliable as possible.

Just like your car and motorcycle need oil changes, lubrication, tires checked,  etc., your motorcycle touring trailer needs some attention as well.

The tire pressure should be checked often.  Some say every time you ride, but at least check it once a week while using your trailer. You never know when something may get in the tire and cause it to leak. As light as a motorcycle trailer is, it may be hard to tell by looking that the pressure is low.

Most of the trailer maintenance mentioned in the rest of this post can be done once a year. Early spring may be the best time, just before the riding season begins, so everything is ready to go when you are.

First, check the trailer coupler to make sure it is still adjusted properly. There is another post on this site that goes into detail for checking coupler adjustment.

Next,  apply a good coat of your favorite wax to keep the paint protected and looking as good as possible.

Then, its best to repack your wheel bearings. This will take the longest and be the most work, but it will be worth it knowing you won’t be stranded along the road somewhere due to wheel bearing failure. If you haven’t done this before, there are several websites that can be found through google.com or ask.com that go into detail about repacking wheel bearings.

If your trailer has polished or chrome wheels, while they’re off for bearing maintenance, it would  be a good time to polish them and make them look good again.

This should cover all the necessary maintenance to keep your trailer looking good and trouble free to enhance your riding experience.

Road Dog Trailers has a full line of well engineered touring trailers for you to choose from.

Does Your Motorcycle Trailer Need An Isolation Relay?

Many riders who make the decision to tow a trailer behind their motorcycle must also make the decision whether to spend the extra money and install a wiring isolation relay along with the new trailer wiring connector.

Unless they have done research and understand what the relay does, they may not know what decision to make, or not make the right one.

An isolation relay is used to properly connect and isolate your trailer’s electrical load from the motorcycle’s factory wiring, fuses, relays and computers and electronics. The main power and ground for the trailer comes directly from the motorcycle’s battery, not the wiring for the motorcycle’s lights.

In an effort to improve mileage, reduce weight and costs, manufacturers are using the smallest gauge of wire that will support the motorcycle’s lights only. The act of simply tapping extra lights on your bike can cause damage; blow fuses, burn out relays, or worse. Also many of today’s motorcycles have ABS (anti-lock brake system) which is computer controlled. If you simply tap into the motorcycle’s wiring for the trailer lights, the added electrical load may cause the ABS to not function properly, or may even damage the computer.

If you ride an older motorcycle, do not have ABS, and have a trailer with LED lighting, it may not be necessary to add an isolation relay. LED lighting adds very little electrical load to the motorcycle’s wiring and may not cause any problems. But you must ask yourself if its worth the risk, as damage may or may not still be possible.

In conclusion, if you have a newer motorcycle, ABS, and standard trailer lighting, an isolation relay should be considered an absolute must. If you have an older motorcycle, no ABS, and LED trailer lighting, it may not be necessary.

Road Dog Trailers have isolation relays for sale along with a full line of motorcycle touring trailers.

The Motorcycle Trailer Swivel Hitch Debate

SWIVEL HITCH

Motorcycle riders who tow touring trailers often question if they should spend the extra money and install a swivel hitch on their trailer. This is an interesting question.  Some riders say that a swivel hitch is not necessary and yet others would never tow a trailer without one.

The riders who say they are not necessary are basing their opinion on the fact that with a standard Fulton type coupler (which is the most popular type) the coupler will rotate left and right on the hitch ball about 35 to 40 degrees. Very seldom would a motorcycle (that’s towing a trailer) lean that far over in a curve. Because of this , they say a swivel hitch is not necessary for towing a trailer in normal riding conditions.

The riders who would not tow a trailer without a swivel hitch say the big advantage of installing one comes in to play, not for riding and towing, but for those rare occasions when a rider may accidently drop his or her motorcycle or lay it over in a crash. In either one of these instances, the coupler would need to rotate much more than 35 to 40 degrees. Without a swivel hitch, the coupler could not rotate far enough, which means something is going to bend or break, whether it’s the motorcycle frame where the hitch is attached, the hitch itself, or the trailer tongue. The installation of  a swivel hitch would prevent damage to any of these items due to over rotation.

So the question riders need to ask themselves when considering whether to install a swivel hitch on their trailer, is not ” will it affect my riding and towing”, but the question should be ” is it possible that I might drop my motorcycle or lay it over someday and have to do all the necessary repairs”. The answer to this question should be the same answer as to whether to install a swivel hitch or not.

Road Dog Trailers has swivel hitches available for purchase, along with a full line of motorcycle touring trailers.
